THE LIST

Artificial Intelligence usually refers to a computer which becomes 'self-aware' or in some way, independent of its creators, has a will of its own, and usually never ends well. The computer adopts a personality, asks questions, or begins to make its own decisions regarding what it 'thinks' it must do about the world, the future, mankind, or itself. For the most part, a show about an artificially intelligent computer system usually is a catastrophic nightmare. There are sometimes the stories where a robot awakens to its own existence, tries to be more human, such as "DATA" in Star Trek, but most of these stories end up with computers which kill a lot of people because they haven't fully grasped emotion or the soul. Since they are machines, they make 'machinelike' decisions and end up being monsters. The arrogance of its creators, like Frankenstein, usually ends up causing destruction, by giving a mindless soulless thing a lot of power. Sometimes the Artificially Intelligent computer or robot ends up making unpredictable decisions which aid mankind unwittingly, such as in Slipstream or Moon. We are always left with the questions, was it really aware, or was it just bad programming?
